Hello Everyone! I live on the East Coast and am about to graduate college. I am interested in teaching, but teaching better! Let me know if the group ever gets together in my neck of the woods or if there are any good conferences out here for me to attend!

Hi Christyna! Thanks for joining our group. Where on the East Coast are you living? And are you planning on staying there after you graduate?

Another event I wanted to alert you to:

Dont Rhine (with School of Echoes, initiated by Ultra-Red) is inviting us to join their conversation during an open session this Saturday, January 12, noon-4 pm. They've been collecting information in conversation from the community and this year will start to work on reflection and collective investigation. There are exciting "experiments in building community, radical education, and art that has relevance for people in struggle" afoot!

I have posted a new event above with all the details. Feel free to reach out to Dont if you have any additional questions!

This website was mentioned in a SitePoint newsletter reporting on An Australian Web Developers conference that just occurred in Sydney - the article is here: http://www.sitepoint.com/four-big-ideas-i-took-from-web-directions-south-2012/ So I came to look at it and found you and your mission. I'm passionate about education and live in LA (west side)

I have taught music, art and technology classed at the high school level as well as privately and have been involved with creating charter schools and alternative learning environments. Also offer online courses in passion based business building : http://www.daniamorris.com/lovelife/ What about yourself - what's your passion surrounding radical pedagogy?

Awesome. I'd love to hear more about your work creating alternative learning environments and the differences you see between in-person vs. online courses sometime! I've taught in many different settings, including after-school programs and adult literacy. I was teaching with an org called Creative Action Project in Austin when I learned about Theatre of the Oppressed -- and have been exploring ways to incorporate that into my work ever since. By trade, I do design for social impact, so that means a lot of community building and capacity building, which is where I see a lot of RadPed ideas and processes coming into play. Still exploring how to combine all these things I love.

Happy election day eve everyone! I posted a recap of our October meeting on the event page: http://hourschool.com/courses/radical-pedagogy-october-meet-up-in-los-angeles-ca ---if anyone who didn't get to make it out is interested. It was a great space for people to discuss their current projects and get some feedback. Look forward to connecting with everyone again soon!

Welcome everyone! I'm curious to know a little more about everyone and what kind of work we do. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to the group if you wish! Share with us how you're a teacher or learner in your life, and what organizations you're affiliated with.

cindy here--
thanks for getting balls rolling, Christina!
so as an introduction of sorts: i work at various intersections between art, activism and education. i'm interested in community engagement projects, too, and i love to use performance based works and traditional craft and/or art projects (is there a difference?) toward that end. vague? yes. i haven't quite figured out what i want to be when i grow up yet...
as far as affiliations: antioch university is my bread a butter. through antioch, i am the site director for a radical educational program that offers a critical college humanities experience for those who would not otherwise have access to higher education. it's called the bridge program, and it's the cat's meow. here's a link: http://www.antiochla.edu/thebridgeprogram/
i teach art and community engagement with students from homeboy industries, and an alternative school on the westside...
as a learner: well, that's pretty much my whole day, everyday...

Thanks for posting this, Cindy! Lately, I have been thinking a lot about how to teach and foster global citizen skills in MS students, so I was particularly interested in "listening as a practice of citizenship" and the idea that media constrains and trains different types of listening. How does active listening relate or apply to your current work? And did yall discuss methods of best practicing active listening in July?

hi Christina--
just noticed this post! sorry! october is crazy, apparently...
we did indeed discuss some methods to active listening practices, but we didn't have time to explore any of them in action. that would be a great idea for another rad ped meeting! unfortunately, oct. 28th is out for me (mom visiting--unless she wants to come!)...i'll post something in the main heading about some ideas for the next one, if that works for you!

Hello Christina! I do not live in your area, but as a life-long teacher, I am very interested in being a part of your discussion. I did read Paolo Freire's book way back. I will look at it again. I am very curious about your undertaking. Thinking of pedagogy in new ways is always so important.
