I stumbled onto this TED talk by Michael Pollan, and it's the first time I understood what permaculture really is! Curious what it looks like on a small scale in a backyard garden? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TQPN1O03z8I#!

This weekend we cleared the yard and got the raised garden beds placed! Anyone have any advice on how to kill vines, they are everywhere! Getting the roots pulled has proven to be difficult simply because there are so many and they run so deep. Any advice is appreciated.

I would just make the time to hand weed them. Pull them out sideways and low to the ground instead of yanking them up and out which usually leads to braking the roots off leaving them in the ground to grow back again. Some regrowth will happen just hand weed them again.

Thanks Maura, these vines have seemingly been around forever so the roots run deep. It is quite a process.

Its a a lot of work. You could always hire a landscaper to do something different from their typical work maintenance and schedule a landscaper to come by to pull the vine up once a month or so. Our guys love to take care of the simple stuff if you need help. https://www.landscapedata.com/Austin

Hi y'all! Did you know that the city of Austin gives away free paint in two lovely shades? Check out Austin's ReBlend paint in Texas Limestone (beige) and Balcones Canyonland (dark beige). It's recycled paint. How cool is that?!

This is awesome! I was just thinking of repainting my studio. Kinda going for a bright color though and wish they had it. Do you just go pick them up at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility?

Does anyone have any advice about attic insulation? I recently found a groupon style deal $99 for $500 worth of attic insulation. I have an older house and insulation is definitely an issue. I appreciate any suggestions!

Hey Magelly! A friend of ours runs a sustainable energy company who might be able to help - what's the groupon link?

Stringio

Hey Ruby, the groupon expired a few days ago. I did not get it because I am learning that some insulation is treated with chemicals to be fire resistant and maybe harmful to your health. I have a lot to learn!

Hey Magelly, are you going to reschedule this meetup? for sometime in Sept? Also, I'm working on finding someone to teach a workshop on permaculture and edible landscaping design! Stay tuned.

Awesome site. Have you tried out any of those natural building techniques yet, Eric?

I built a shed with them about a year ago using reclaimed building materials. I haven't tried out other building techniques, but would love to do some cob construction. An oven would probably be a good place to start.

Nice! Would love to see some pictures of the shed if you have em. Did you take a workshop with them, or did they actually help you build your shed?

You should also add cob construction to our mission's topics list! Is anyone else interested in cob construction or building with other natural materials?

And a little inspiration..... Magelly, what style do you like for your yard?

Alex, I like a simple design that is inviting. The plans I like the most tend to have little to no grass, curving paths and use recycled materials.

I would like to redesign my backyard to make it an area I enjoy. Currently it is an area filled with mosquitoes, patches of grass, and not living up to its potential. Does anyone have experience with xeriscape design or layout?
